Reading the Report
The Engagement Overview shows us many of the discrete activities a user performs once they land on the site. The sections include Engagement Time, View and Events, Event Counts by Name, Views by Page Title, User Activity Over Time, and User Stickiness. This report covers the range of dates from August 25 to September 23, 2021.
Making Sense of the Numbers
The Average Engagement Time (AET) records how long a given user was actively engaging with the site over multiple sessions. The record shows this time to be 3m 45s, with an average of 2.1 engaged sessions per user. However, the AET per session considers all sessions (including inactive ones), thus the time of 1m 17s is much lower than the overall AET.
From the Views and Events count we can see that over the course of 755 views our users created 2.3k events, resulting in an average of 3 events per user. After the initial 755 page_view event, users were most likely to scroll the page, and 694 user_engagement events indicate they may have been scrolling slowly while reading the content.
User Activity Over Time shows that 28 unique users have visited the site over the past 30 days, and 6 over the past 7 days, which is roughly inline with the average. The 1-day active users metric cannot be relied upon as it is too small to create any meaningful trend.
User Stickiness provides some interesting ratios that show correlations between Daily Active Users (DAU), Weekly Active Users (WAU), and Monthly Active Users (MAU). For instance, taking DAU over MAU we see that our daily users are only 7.1% of our monthly users, meaning the majority of users were not re-engaging or that the site generally lost interest over the course of the month.
Better Reporting
One key insight I gained from this report is the importance of the page title in Google Analytics. The report has separated the page views by page title, but since I changed the title of some pages the report is somewhat inaccurate. In order to fix the report, I might be able to group the corresponding page titles in a custom view, however I also have data for pages where the title was unset. I will have to audit the pages to determine which ones need to be fixed.
